High-abrasion open-pit mining can shorten component life even when a part meets its nominal dimensions. Ore mineralogy, fragment size, machine loading, haul cycles and operator technique all influence the wear rate. A useful improvement program therefore starts with evidence from the worn component rather than an automatic increase in hardness.

Use the worn part as operating data

Uniform wear often indicates predictable material flow. Localized grooves can point to concentrated abrasion, while asymmetric wear may indicate alignment, loading or track-tension conditions. Impact fractures tell a different story again. Recording the position, direction and depth of wear makes the failure mode easier to distinguish.

Practical approach: record service hours, material condition, wear position and operating duty before changing alloy, heat treatment or component geometry.

Match material properties to the duty

Hardness is valuable only when supported by sufficient toughness. STRUMEX product specifications use different balances for different functions: bucket teeth are specified at 50–55 HRC with impact energy above 20 J at -40°C; adaptors use quenched-and-tempered alloy wear steel at 260–300 BHN with 50–80 J KV at -40°C; cast lips are specified at 260–300 BHN with 70–90 J KV at -40°C. The differences reflect how each part transfers load and encounters material.

Control the manufacturing chain

Reliable field performance depends on repeatability from heat to heat and batch to batch. STRUMEX integrates Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking, AOD refining, heat treatment, CNC machining and final assembly. Critical dimensions are verified by CMM, while hardness, visual condition and material certificates form part of pre-delivery control.

Improvement should be measurable

Compare wear rate per operating hour, not only the date of replacement. When the operating condition is documented and the component is traceable to its production batch, material or geometry changes can be evaluated against a clear baseline instead of anecdotal impressions.
